UV inspection for corona detection on high-voltage lines via UAV

Drone Division developed a global methodology for UV inspection on overhead power lines.

UV detection is an important technology used on high-voltage lines for detecting corona.

Corona is a phenomenon associated with all transmission lines. Under certain conditions, the local electric field near energised components and conductors can produce a small electrical discharge or corona, causing the surrounding air molecules to ionise or undergo a small local change in electrical charge. The level of field strengths generally depends on the geometry of the situation. The ionisation of air around a conductor is dangerous because it can form an invisible discharge path.

Detection reduces power outages and improves grid reliability

High-voltage lines are critical infrastructure and it is important to keep them in good condition. However, inspecting these lines is both time-consuming and dangerous. UV detection offers a solution to this by providing real-time monitoring of the condition of the lines.

UV detection works by detecting ultra-violet radiation emitted by the insulation of high-voltage cables. When the insulation is exposed to high temperatures or damaged, UV radiation can be released. Using a dedicated camera on a drone, Drone Division identifies, manages and locates specific problems.

This system is an efficient and effective way to monitor the condition of lines. It not only provides a safer working environment for operators but also improves the reliability and availability of electricity supply. It is an important tool for high-voltage infrastructure operators.

How corona discharges can affect your infrastructure:

โš ๏ธ Power loss
โš ๏ธ Increased audible noise
โš ๏ธ Electromagnetic interference
โš ๏ธ Insulation failure
โš ๏ธ Equipment failure
โš ๏ธ Environmental concerns

The advantage of corona inspection:

A detection by a UV camera always indicates a structural or electrical defect.

The ROI of corona detection for asset management overhead lines is positive as corona inspections:
โœ… Improved power transmission efficiency
โœ… Reduced maintenance costs
โœ… Increased asset reliability

By detecting corona discharges and addressing any problems at an early stage, asset managers can help extend the life of their overhead lines and minimise the risk of equipment failure and unplanned downtime.

This can lead to significant cost savings and improve the overall reliability and performance of the power transmission system.
